What we know of today as the tricorn hat was referred in the 18th Century as a cocked hat. The tricorn style originated with Spanish soldiers in Flanders during the 17th century to allow better clearance for the ends of their muskets when standing them upright. During the 18th century the tricorn hat would become the style worn by most everyone, both aristocrat and common man. The style allowed for the wearer to show off the newest fashion of wig and also to be able to easily tuck the hat under their arm when entering a building, as removing ones hat indoors was custom.

This black faux wool reproduction of the 18th century style is available to take home and relive your colonial adventures at the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum.
