This lapel features the Gadsden flag or Hopkins flag, which features a rattle snake and the warning phrase "Don't Tread on Me," was designed and presented by Christopher Gadsden, who was a delegate to South Carolina, during a visit to the Continental Congress in 1775. This design of flag was also used by Esek Hopkins, the first Commodore of the United States Navy, as his personal ensign.
